چکیده

There is no need to show the importance of arc-consistency in Constraint Networks. Mohr and Henderson [8] have proposed AC-4, an algorithm having an optimal worst-case time complexity. But it has two drawbacks: its space complexity and its average time complexity. In problems with many solutions, where the size of the constraints is large, these drawbacks become so important that users often replace AC-4 by AC-3 [7], a nonoptimal algorithm. In this paper, we propose a new algorithm, AC-6, which keeps the optimal worst-case time complexity of AC-4 while working out the drawback of space complexity. More, the average time complexity of AC-6 is optimal for constraint networks where nothing is known about the semantic of the constraints. At the end of the paper, experimental results show how much AC-6 outperforms AC-3 andּAC-4.

Maintaining Singleton Arc-Consistency

Singleton Arc-Consistency (SAC) [7] is a simple and strong level of consistency but is costly to enforce. To date, research has focused on improving the performance of algorithms that achieve SAC, and comparing algorithms as a preprocessing step before actually solving a problem. Here, we show for the first time how a basic SAC algorithm can be readily incorporated into an open source constrain...

Peek arc consistency

This paper studies peek arc consistency, a reasoning technique that extends the wellknown arc consistency technique for constraint satisfaction. In contrast to other more costly extensions of arc consistency that have been studied in the literature, peek arc consistency requires only linear space and quadratic time and can be parallelized in a straightforward way such that it runs in linear tim...

Theoretical Analysis of Singleton Arc Consistency

Singleton arc consistency (SAC) is a local consistency that enhances the pruning capability of arc consistency by ensuring that the network can be made arc consistent after any assignment of a value to a variable. While some algorithms have been proposed in the literature to enforce SAC, a more in-depth theoretical analysis of this local consistency has never been published. In this paper, we g...

2-C3: From Arc-Consistency to 2-Consistency

Arc consistency algorithms are widely used to prune the search space of Constraint Satisfaction Problems (CSPs). Since many researchers associate arc consistency with binary normalized CSPs, there is a confusion between the notion of arc consistency and 2-consistency. 2-consistency guarantees that any instantiation of a value to a variable can be consistently extended to any second variable. Th...

Decidable Relationships between Consistency Notions for Constraint Satisfaction Problems

We define an abstract pebble game that provides game interpretations for essentially all known consistency algorithms for constraint satisfaction problems including arc-consistency, (j, k)-consistency, k-consistency, k-minimality, and refinements of arc-consistency such as peek arc-consistency and singleton arc-consistency. Our main result is that for any two instances of the abstract pebble ga...

Arc Consistency for Soft Constraints

The notion of arc consistency plays a central role in constraint satisfaction. It is known since [19, 4, 5] that the notion of local consistency can be extended to constraint optimisation problems defined by soft constraint frameworks based on an idempotent cost combination operator. This excludes non idempotent operators such as + which define problems which are very important in practical app...
